Hay pocas cosas más interesantes y reveladoras que volver sobre el primer libro de quien se convertirá en un gran escritor. Sobre todo si ese debut ha sido a lo grande. En El libro de Rachel (1973) Martin Amis, entonces veinteañero con aire de Mick Jagger ilustrado, anunciaba ya todo lo brillante que estaba por venir. Novela de iniciación a la vez que terminal, lo que el joven autor se propuso y consiguió–según declaraciones contemporáneas a la primera edición–fue «evitar el riesgo de convertir la adolescencia en algo tan aburrido como suele ser la adolescencia» y «revelar ese momento en que el sexo se transforma en algo ya fundamentalmente poco misterioso». Este libro no es una biografía de Carlos Castilla del Pino ni un estudio sobre su obra.
